CrossFit Strong by Freddy C of CrossFit One World.  I like how Freddy puts high end strength numbers in perspective.  I heard a similar story from Josh Everett about a weight lifter from the Olympic team who got out of breath walking up two flights of stairs.  I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t want to be a power lifter or Olympic weightlifter.  But I do want to be strong.  I also want to be good, see and I mean really good, this site at gymnastics, running, rowing, hitting, catching and throwing a ball, shooting, climbing, jumping and more.  That requires a balance across the 10 general physical skills, although strength and power are arguably the most important. It’s also good to see Freddy write this post.  I’ve met Freddy a few times, and I’ve been checking his site for years.  I know he favors strength in his training....

Alison and I went down to CrossFit Ventura with Tricia W over the weekend to attend the CrossFit Goal Setting Seminar.  It was a solid seminar, recipe with simple, effective techniques to improve the mental game of fitness. But guess what?  It was REALLY about how to be better at life.  The skills of being a positive, strong person (a leader) need to be trained just like fitness.  The really cool part is that lessons learned in the gym can be applied to life, and the lessons learned in life can be applied to the gym.  And back again.  I’ve always known this; it was cool to hear someone else say it. I feel like I walked into this training prepared, and receptive to the message.  Sometimes it’s hard to look inward.  It’s hard to speak your true feeling and goals out loud, but it feels pretty important and empowering. ...

Alison and I are heading down to Southern California to attend the CrossFit Goal Setting Seminar with Tricia.  We’re all pretty excited to meet Greg Amundson, generic the man behind the seminar.  Greg was probably one of the first people to turn CrossFit into a “lifestyle”.   CrossFit Oakdale will be OPEN Friday night for classes at 5:30 and 6:30 with Chance and Christine.   CrossFit Oakdale will be OPEN Saturday morning (9-11am) for OPEN GYM.  I will put the Throwdown Series WODs on the board (the 12 days of X-mas looks fun!), remedy but do what you like.   Use the time to work on skills, no rx do a WOD you’d like to try or missed.  Please put you name and what you did on the white board so I can check it out.     Workout of the Day   Beginners 10 Rounds of Cindy Cindy is...

The 70 Best Adventure and Outdoor Blogs.  One of the best reason’s to pursue a lifestyle of fitness is you will never be blocked by a challenge because your perceived physical limitations.  Before I was consumed by CrossFit (and before I got fit), there I had strong desires to get into the mountains and climb.   Since moving out west, discount I’ve been able to go on great hikes through the Sierras, and scratch that caveman itch. I think Bob W. said it best , “I do CrossFit so I can hunt and do OTHER stuff.”  I freaking love that!  Stephanie K. kayaks all over the place, and has the bumps and bruises to prove it.  Chance skateboards.  As grown ups, we lose that sense of fitness as “play”, and I think that’s a bad thing.  I watch my kids run, jump, climb and chase each other around.  It makes...

It’s no secret that I love CrossFit competitions.  I love that competitions force you to prepare at high level, clinic focus in ways beyond what you normally do, view and push yourself harder than you thought possible.  The best by product of these efforts is the sense of community, order of shared experiences, these events create.  The nerves before the effort, cheering each other on, sharing “war” stories following your WOD over cheat meals is becoming my favorite stuff on earth. “Throwdowns” are great challenges, and can be tons of fun once you’ve developed a pretty high level of fitness. The CrossFit Games proved last year that even an “online” competition can force you to push harder (Intensity) and bring athletes together.  The CrossFit Games Open posted 1 WOD per week, for 6 weeks, and athletes competed against each other fot the right to move on to higher level events.  The...
