Week of 6/7/2020

The 2020 rollercoaster continues. The CrossFit founder and CEO is in the news for saying horrible things to an affiliate owner in Seattle and in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department.  Google them if you are curious – I’m not going to repost them.

At CrossFit Oakdale we love and support all humans.  We do not restrict our community by race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, ideology or any other -isms.  One thing we cannot abide is a bully.  I have spent the last 20 years of my life fighting bullies in many forms.

We do not support any of the recent comments made by CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman.  His comments are unacceptable under any conditions, and his silence following these outrageous comments is disappointing to say the least.

We aim to be the best versions of ourselves, thereby creating the best versions of our families, friends, gym, community, town and beyond.  We truly believe the lessons we learn and share in the gym can change the world.  Glassman’s statements do not reflect the values of CrossFit Oakdale.

CrossFit has taught us that through hard work, we can overcome huge challenges.  It has taught us to be humble.  We also know these values and lessons are bigger than one man.  I have read, listened and cheered Greg Glassman for years.  I have enjoyed and been motivated by his pioneering free spirit, his natural contrarian and libertarian values, and his unrelenting vision for his creation.  I have enjoyed as he twisted the knife in cooperate funded science, big soda, globo gyms and fake affiliates. What I have not always enjoyed is the meanness that he uses to attack his enemies.

We hold CrossFit to a high standard, and we hold our leaders to a higher standard.  When you go after a gym owner that is under you, using the meanest language possible, you are being the worst kind of bully.  When you make disgusting comments about the death of a man that is literally mobilized the western world – causing millions of people – around the world – to get off the couch and take to the streets – you are showing that you are not playing by the same rules as the CrossFit community that you helped build.

We will continue to serve our community while we await comments from CrossFit HQ.  We will make a  decision about the direction of CrossFit Oakdale’s name and our affiliation in the near future.  We eagerly await CrossFit addressing this issue.
