Dark Side of the Moon

Today’s WOD is kind of special.  CrossFit Oakdale had amazing support when we opened a little over a year ago.  Not only were we a new gym, prostate but our environment was a little more austere than what some athlete’s were used to.  Not only that, the complex that CrossFit Oakdale is in was less crowded, so there was no lighting in the parking lot.  I likened driving to the gym on winter days to be kind of like dying – head to the light.  Because there was no parking lot or building lights, once you passed Conlin’s, it was pitch black.  As you drove to the gym, you drove to the door with the only light in the whole complex.

On one of the early days, before we had more than a handful of members, Chance, Louis, Alison and I were doing the WOD posted below, which had recently been posted on the CrossFit.com main site.  We were in the middle of the WOD, and the power went completely out – not just in the building, but in the whole complex.  Even Conlin’s was pitch black.  No music, only a little red light from the exit sign.  No one considered stopping, we just kept going, grabbing phones with flashlight apps, and Chance pulled his truck around, shining it’s lights in the gym before hopping back on the KB.  We didn’t have music, just each other’s heavy breathing.

When we finished, we found out that a transformer had blown, as a work crew was local and working on the problem.  They said the lights would be out for a few hours.  As we started cleaning up, Gloria, Don and Stephanie pulled up, in complete darkness for the 6:30pm class.  We explained to them that the power was out, but we had done the WOD in the dark.  I told Glo, Don and Steph, – “Look- we did this in the dark, but you don’t have to.”  Without hesitation, they said they wanted to do it.  We fired up the flashlight apps, pulled the cars around so the lights shined on the gym, and they knocked out this brutal WOD.

This is a great example of what we’re about at CFO – ready for anything (including complete blackness), positive attitude and ready to support each other.
